ASMI Unveils New Name and Logo at 55th Anniversary

In 2023, ASMI underwent a rebranding, unveiling a new name and logo at its 55th Anniversary Dinner. This refreshed identity marks a new chapter for ASMI, symbolizing our commitment to progress, collaboration, and a future-focused vision for Singapore’s marine and offshore energy industries. The redesigned logo embodies ASMI’s core values, reflecting innovation, unity, and resilience. This revitalized identity reinforces our legacy while embracing the sector’s evolving needs, positioning ASMI as a beacon of growth and sustainability for years to come.

2021

COVID-19 Response and Industry Initiatives

During the COVID-19 pandemic, ASMI, alongside SCAL and ASPRI, piloted a programme to safely bring foreign workers into Singapore, incorporating overseas testing and local health protocols for secure entry. On 25 May 2021, ASMI partnered with IMDA and ESG to launch the Marine & Offshore Engineering Industry Digital Plan (IDP), aiding SMEs in digital adoption for productivity and competitiveness. In November 2021, ASMI introduced "ASMI Gives Back," a 5,000km virtual run raising funds for migrant workers’ mental health, with the goal of distributing 5,000 care packs on International Migrants Day, 18 December 2021.

ASMI Enterprise Award 2020: Recognizing Leadership and Excellence in Marine and Offshore Engineering

ASMI presented initiated and presented the ASMI Enterprise Award 2020 during the Industry Appreciation Event on 14 December (a virtual event in place of the annual anniversary dinner), recognising companies demonstrating leadership, sound financial management, and strong safety processes within the Marine and Offshore Engineering (M&OE) industry.

2019

New Leadership and Strategic Expansion into Offshore Wind Energy Mark ASMI's Continued Growth

Mr. Simon Kuik, Vice President and Head of Research and Development at Sembcorp Marine Ltd, was elected as ASMI’s 15th President during the 51st Annual General Meeting, serving from 2019 to 2021. In the same period, ASMI organized Singapore's first collective participation at the Asia-Pacific Wind Energy Expo, marking its inaugural offshore wind energy event in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Additionally, ASMI led a Study Mission to the Netherlands, exploring developments and opportunities within the offshore wind market. This initiative was part of ASMI’s efforts under the Industry Transformation Map (ITM) to guide the sector toward new growth areas.

2018

ASMI Celebrates Golden Jubilee and Strengthens Industry Transformation and Skills Initiatives

In 2018, ASMI celebrated its 50th anniversary with significant milestones that supported the transformation of the marine and offshore energy sector. The year began with a "lo-hei" reception, followed by the launch of the M&OE Industry Transformation Map (ITM) and the Skills Framework for Marine and Offshore. To drive the ITM initiatives, ASMI established an ITM Programme Office in May. In addition, ASMI signed an MOU with various stakeholders during Marine Week 2018 to reaffirm its commitment to skills development. That year, ASMI also organized a Study Mission to Norway and the Netherlands, focusing on LNG technology and opportunities in the LNG value chain.

2017

ASMI Welcomes New Leadership and Expands Presence with Relocation and Global Outreach

Mr Abu Bakar Bin Mohd Nor, Managing Director (Gas & Specialised Vessels), Keppel Offshore and Marine, was appointed as the Association’s 14th President, for period 2017 to 2019. ASMI is one of the 22 trade associations to relocate to the Trade Association Hub at Jurong Town Hall. The facility was officially opened by Prime Minister (PM) Lee Hsien Loong on 22 November 2017. PM Lee visited ASMI during his tour of the Trade Association Hub. ASMI debuted with a Singapore Pavilion at Europort, the biennial exhibition for maritime technology in Amsterdam.

Advancing Workforce Transformation: Supporting SMEs through LED and Marine PCP Initiatives

ASMI was appointed by WSG as the Lean Enterprise Development (LED) multiplier to assist small and medium-sized enterprises in the M&OE industry tap on government schemes to restructure their businesses and build new capabilities. ASMI was appointed Programme Manager for the Marine Professional Conversion Programme (PCP) by Workforce Singapore (WSG) in October to help mid-career Professionals, Managers, Executives and Technicians (PMETs) to undergo skills conversion and move into new job roles in the marine and offshore industry.

2015

ASMI's Global Outreach and Industry Leadership: New Initiatives and International Engagements

Mr. Chow Yew Yuen, CEO of Keppel Offshore and Marine, was elected as ASMI’s 13th President for 2015–2017. During his term, ASMI facilitated Singapore-based companies’ entry into the Vietnamese market through its first participation at INMEX Vietnam. It also launched its first Singapore Pavilion at Oil and Gas Asia in Kuala Lumpur. In October 2015, ASMI signed an MOU with WDA and tertiary institutions for the Marine Industry SkillsFuture Earn-and-Learn Programme and Enhanced Internship. Additionally, ASMI led Singapore’s debut at the Gastech Conference and Exhibition, highlighting the nation’s strengths in natural gas and LNG solutions.

Leading Singapore's Participation in Key Global Oil & Gas Exhibitions

ASMI formed Singapore Pavilion in the Australasian Oil & Gas in Perth, Australia. ASMI led Singapore’s representation at the inaugural Offshore Technology Conference Asia edition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Singapore participated collectively under the ASMI-organised Singapore Pavilion for the first time at the Rio Oil and Gas Expo and Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Singapore made its debut in a national pavilion organised by ASMI at the Offshore Korea trade show in Busan.

Representing Singapore at Key Maritime and Oil & Gas Exhibitions

ASMI organised Singapore’s first representation at the Indonesia Maritime Expo (IME) and Oil and Gas Indonesia (OGI) in Jakarta, Indonesia. ASMI flew the Singapore flag for the first time at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference (ADIPEC) held in Abu Dhabi, UAE with a Singapore Pavilion supported by IE Singapore. ASMI and IE Singapore co-organised a business mission to Perth, Australia to help Singapore companies appraise the market environment and opportunities in the oil and gas industry in Western Australia.

Launching Programs and Leading Business Missions to Drive Industry Growth

ASMI collaborated with WDA and SIMTech to launch the OMNI@Marine Programme, aimed at boosting productivity for marine companies. Together with WDA, ASMI also introduced the STEP Marine & Offshore Scholarship, allowing industry employees to pursue a Master’s in Marine Technology at Newcastle University. To expand international opportunities, ASMI co-organized business missions with IE Singapore and SPRING Singapore, including trips to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Abu Dhabi, UAE. These initiatives reflect ASMI’s commitment to advancing workforce skills, enhancing productivity, and fostering global connections within the marine and offshore industry.

Strengthening Singapore's Marine Industry

ASMI led Singapore’s participation at the Shipbuilding Machinery and Marine Technology (SMM) exhibition in Hamburg, Germany. ASMI set up the Marine Industry Training Centre (MITC) in its new premises at 30 Tuas Ave 10 to make available training resources and facilities to conduct more customised training for industry members. ASMI received funding support under the Local Enterprise and Association Development II (LEAD II) programme, for projects to upgrade the association’s capabilities and enhance the industry’s competitiveness. ASMI organised its first Singapore Pavilion at the 18th edition of the international oil and gas exhibition OSEA 2010 held in Singapore.

Leadership and Safety Initiatives: ASMI’s Milestones under President Mr. Wong Seng Sun

Mr Wong Seng Sun, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sembcorp Marine, becaume ASMI's 12th President serving three consecutive terms from 2009 to 2015. ASMI organised Singapore’s first participation at the INMEX India maritime exhibition in Mumbai, India. ASMI launched a new initiative ‘Marine Industry Safety Engagement Team’ (MIndSET) to adopt a pro-active approach towards Workplace Safety and Health performance in shipyards. ASMI introduced Confined Space Safety training for Shipyard Workers, Supervisors and other personnel working in the shipyards.

Continued Commitment to Education, Innovation, and Industry Growth: Celebrating 40 Years of Advancing the Marine and Offshore Sectors

ASMI launched the ASMI-ITE Scholarship for students enrolled in the Higher NITEC in Marine Offshore Engineering course. A new ASMI-Naval Architecture Scholarship was introduced for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering in Naval Architecture with Honours course offered by the University of Newcastle in partnership with Ngee Ann and Singapore Polytechnics. The ASMI Super V2 Scheme was launched to attract more ITE graduates embark on a career in the marine and offshore industry. ASMI celebrated its 40th anniversary with a commemorative publication - "Braving New Waves Together". ASMI launched a new logo to reflect a more vibrant image and in keeping with the dynamism of the industry it serves.

Collaborative Efforts to Promote Singapore’s Maritime Industry on the Global Stage

ASMI collaborated with Keppel Corporation, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) to commission a Mandarin drama serial, ' The Peak', which was broadcasted over prime time television. ASMI and SMF co-organised Singapore's participation at the inaugural Sea Asia 2007, an exhibition and conference event showcasing the maritime industries across Asia. ASMI organised Singapore’s first national participation at the marine exhibition, Marintec China 2007, in Shanghai, China.

Strategic Initiatives for Industry Growth, Safety, and Global Engagement

ASMI was appointed by MOM as a Risk Management Assistance Fund (RMAF) Agent to promote, process and endorse RMAF applications for marine companies. ASMI led Singapore's representation in the premier international offshore oil and gas exhibition, Offshore Technology Conference 2006, for the first time in Houston, Texas, USA, with the support of International Enterprise (IE) Singapore. ASMI received funding support under the Local Enterprise and Association Development (LEAD) programme, a multi-agency government initiative jointly led by SPRING Singapore and IE Singapore.

Commitment to Safety, Workforce Development, and Industry Collaboration

ASMI organized a pledge signing ceremony with MOM, where 50 CEOs and senior leaders committed to enhancing safety and health in shipyard environments. Mr. Michael Chia, Executive Director of Keppel FELS, was elected as ASMI’s 11th President, serving from 2005 to 2009. In partnership with the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), ASMI launched the RSN-ASMI Career Transition Scheme, supporting naval specialists transitioning into the marine industry. Additionally, ASMI introduced the Super V Scheme under the Marine Job Re-Creation Programme, in collaboration with NTUC and WDA, aimed at making marine industry careers more appealing to Singaporeans.

Initiatives to Inspire Future Talent and Strengthen the Marine Workforce

ASMI organised a series of shipyard tours for secondary school students to raise awareness on marine industry and interest the young towards the industry as a career of choice. The ASMI Marine Engineering Scholarship was introduced for O-level students applying for the Diploma in Marine Engineering as the first choice course of study in Singapore Polytechnic. ASMI launched the Marine and Offshore Undergraduate Scholarship scheme for final year Mechanical and Production Engineering students of Nanyang Technological University enrolled in the marine and offshore specialisation module.

Commitment to Safety Standards and Innovation in the Marine Industry

Four Safety Guides on lock-out & tag-out procedures, crane inspection and maintenance, hot work certification and safety briefings, were produced by ASMI to serve as reference guides for industry members. ASMI and Marine Group LIUP (Local Industries Upgrading Programme) jointly organised the Marine Innovation Competition to encourage innovative solutions to problems encountered by the industry.

Initiatives in Workforce Development, International Collaboration, and Industry Recognition

ASMI launched the Marine & Offshore Technology Scholarship, encouraging top O-level students to choose the Marine and Offshore Technology diploma at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. To advance dispute resolution, ASMI signed an MOU with the Singapore Mediation Centre to promote mediation in the marine industry. Designated by ITE, ASMI became an accredited Skills Assessment Centre, conducting trade certification tests. Additionally, ASMI joined EDB and JTC in a study trip to Dubai and the Netherlands focused on Multi-User Yard facilities. Fifty shipyard and marine company workers were honored with NTUC’s Model Worker Awards, recognizing their contributions to Singapore’s key economic sectors.

International Expansion, Workforce Engagement, and Productivity Initiatives

ASMI organised its first Singapore Pavilion in Norway at Nor-Shipping 2001 held in Oslo. ASMI jointly organised the 'Marine Industry Fair 2001: Anchor Your Career with Us’ with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to attract more Singaporeans to join the industry. It was the first major collective promotion and recruitment exercise for the industry. The ASMI Productivity Road Show was staged to promote productivity improvement and showcase innovative projects within the industry.

ASMI Expands Scholarship Scheme and Becomes Accredited Assessment Centre to Develop Talent and Enhance Skills in the Marine Industry

The ASMI Scholarship Scheme was extended to students in the electrical, mechanical and marine engineering diploma courses in Singapore Polytechnic to attract more engineers to join the industry. ASMI was appointed as Accredited Assessment Centre under the National Skills Recognition System for assessing workplace skills competencies for the marine industry.

ASMI Marks 30 Years with New Initiatives: Expanded Scholarship Scheme, Inaugural Safety Convention, and Certified Marine Supervisor Award

ASMI released its 30th Anniversary commemorative publication, “ASMI – A Shared Purpose, 30 Years of Linking Up the Marine Industry”. The ASMI Scholarship scheme was extended to students in the electrical and mechanical engineering courses in Ngee Ann Polytechnic in line with the industry’s needs for engineers in various fields. ASMI organised the first Safety Improvement Teams (SIT) Convention for marine industry to provide a platform for members to share successful safety improvement projects with one another for mutual benefits. ASMI introduced the Certified Marine Supervisor Award to encourage upgrading of supervisory personnel and to give recognition to outstanding marine supervisors.

ASMI Advances Safety with New Management Code and European Study Mission

ASMI participated in the study mission to Europe organised by the Advisory on the Prevention of Accidents in the Shipbuilding and Shiprepairing Industry, to look into ways to improve safety and health in Singapore shipyards. ASMI developed the Safety Management Code to provide a framework for shipyards to implement Safety Management Systems in their workplaces. Mr Wong Peng Kin, General Manager (Personnel) of Jurong Shipyard, took over as the ninth President of ASMI from 1996 to 1997.

ASMI Expands Global Reach with Exhibitions and Collaborations

ASMI participated in two overseas international maritime exhibitions - ‘Marine Indonesia 1993’ in Jakarta, Indonesia and ‘Ship Repair and Conversion 1993 Exhibition’ in London, United Kingdom. A joint Ministry of Labour-ASMI delegation visited Japan to study Japanese safety practices in shipyards.

ASMI Appointed as Industry Coordinator for ITE's Marine Trade Tests

ASMI was appointed by the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) to serve as the industry co-ordinating body to conduct trade tests under its Public Trade Test (PTT) system for marine workers. Mr Tan Mong Seng, Managing Director of Sembawang Shipyard, served the industry as the seventh President of ASMI from 1991 to 1995.

SASAR Introduces Scholarship for Shipbuilding Students and Organizes Trade Missions to East Africa and Asia for Industry Growth and Insights

The Association introduced a new scholarship for students enrolled in the Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering diploma course in Ngee Ann Polytechnic to retain trained manpower in the industry. SASAR organised a 10-day trade mission to East Africa for members to assess the business climate of Kenya, Mauritius, Nairobi and Mombasa. SASAR and the unions jointly organised a study mission to visit shipyards and steel mills in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan, to look into labour-management practices, productivity improvement, job enrichment, human resource management and flexi-wage system.

Singapore Becomes World’s Largest Ship Repair Centre

Singapore became the largest ship repair centre in the world with an aggregate deadweight of 2.82 million tonnes. Mr Loh Wing Siew, Managing Director of Keppel Shipyard, became the Association’s fifth President from 1983 to 1989.

SASAR led an 11-member team on a study mission to Japan to study mechanisation in shipyards.

SASAR Launches Safety Checklists and Career Campaign to Attract Talent and Promote Safety in Marine Trades

SASAR introduced safety checklists for all key marine trades to instil safety consciousness among the rank-and-file workers. ASAR carried out a publicity campaign aimed at school leavers, reservists and technical graduates to encourage them to carve a career in the ship repair and shipbuilding industry. The campaign culminated in the Careers 1981 Exhibition.

Singapore played host to Marintec Asia 1979, one of the largest international marine exhibitions to be organised, with 500 exhibitors from 21 countries.

SASAR organised the first Singapore Pavilion at Posidonia 1976 International Shipping Exhibition in Greece to promote the ship repair and shipbuilding industry. SASAR organised the first ship-in-service seminar in the world, shipcare 1976, which drew 321 delegates from 20 countries.

The Journey of Innovation: A Brief History of ASMI

The Singapore Association of Shipbuilders and Repairers (SASAR) was formed in April with ten members representing a third of the shipyards in operation. Mr John A Wilde spearheaded the formation of SASAR and became its first President from 1968 to 1970.
